HYUNDAI ix35 FUEL CELL TO DEMONSTRATE REAL-WORLD BENEFITS TO EU DECISION-MAKERS

Decision-makers allover the world should try this zero-emission car, especially decision-makers in North Africa and the Middle East because of the extreme pollution in this those parts of the world.

But for the time-being only the political decision-makers in Brussels will have the pleasure of driving this car, as the Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell has been selected for the second consecutive year by the European Commission-backed Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU) to demonstrate the real-world benefits of hydrogen fuel cell technology. The world’s first production fuel cell electric vehicle, the ix35 Fuel Cell, will be made available throughout 2013 to members of the European Parliament, European Commission officials and other policymakers for test drives in Brussels, Belgium.

Hyundai Motor was awarded its first leasing contract for a hydrogen-powered fuel cell car by the FCH JU in October 2011. Over the course of 2012, the ix35 Fuel Cell was presented to EU decision-makers, stakeholders and the general public at a number of demonstration drives and public events in Brussels and other locations across Europe.

President of Hyundai MotorEurope B.K. Rimsaid: “We are delighted that the FCH JU has chosen the ix35 Fuel Cell as its European demonstration vehicle and look forward to working with them to promote the benefits of hydrogen and fuel cell technology. We are sure that the leading policymakers and opinion-formers who drive this remarkable vehicle will find its ability to deliver performance and comfort without compromising its eco-friendly nature withtailpipe emissions highly compelling.”

Hyundai has become one of the orld-leader in the development of hydrogen fuel cell technology since the introduction of the Santa Fe FCEV in 2000 and operates a dedicated fuel cell research division at its Eco Technology Research Institute in Korea. In January 2013 the company became the world’s first automaker to begin assembly-line production of zero-emission, hydrogen-powered vehicles.

Hyundai plans to build 1,000 examples of the ix35 Fuel Cell by 2015 for lease to public and private fleets, primarily in Europe, where the European Commission has established a road map for construction of a pan-European hydrogen fuelling station network. A total of 17 ix35 Fuel Cell vehicles have already been ordered by the cities of Copenhagen, Denmark and Skåne, Sweden.

Leading automakers, including Hyundai, have declared support for more refuelling stations to prepare the market for mass production of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.

The Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell:
Using Hyundai’s proprietary technology, the ix35 Fuel Cell’s fuel cell stack converts hydrogen into electricity, which turns the vehicle’s motor. The only emission generated is water.

The ix35 Fuel Cell can be refuelled with hydrogen in only a few minutes. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 12.5 seconds, has a top speed of 160 km/h and can travel 594kilometres on a single tank.

The ix35 Fuel Cell is the result of 14 years and several hundred million euros of research by hundreds of engineers at Hyundai Eco Technology Research Institutein Mabuk, Korea. The car has logged more than 3 million kilometres of road tests in real-world conditions in Europe, Korea and the U.S.

Hyundai Motor was established in 1967 and has grown into the Hyundai Motor Group, with more than two dozen auto-related subsidiaries and affiliates. Hyundai Motor - which has seven manufacturing bases outside of South Korea including Brazil, China, the Czech Republic, India, Russia, Turkey and the U.S. - sold 4.4 million vehicles globally in 2012. Hyundai Motor, which employs over 80,000 workers worldwide, offers a full line-up of products including small to large passenger vehicles, SUVs and commercial vehicles.

The Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU) is a unique public private partnership supporting research, technological development and demonstration (RTD) activities in fuel cell and hydrogen energy technologies in Europe. Its aim is to accelerate the market introduction of these technologies, realizing their potential as an instrument in achieving a carbon-lean energy system.

Fuel cells, as an efficient conversion technology, and hydrogen, as a clean energy carrier, have great potential to help fight carbon dioxide emissions, to reduce dependence on hydrocarbons and to contribute to economic growth. The objective of the FCH JU is to bring these benefits to Europeans through a concentrated effort from all sectors.

The three members of the FCH JU are the European Commission, fuel cell and hydrogen industries represented by the NEW Industry Grouping and the research community represented by Research Grouping N.ERGHY.

Hyundai Motor Europe designs, engineers and manufactures cars in Europe, specifically for European consumers. In 2012, Hyundai achieved European sales of 444.000 units, taking a new-car market share of 3,5%. Almost 95% of the vehicles Hyundai sells in the region are designed, engineered and tested in Europe. And more than 70% are built at its two local factories (Czech Republic and Turkey), including New Generation i30, which is shortlisted for Europe’s 2013 Car of the Year award. Hyundai sells cars in 28 European countries across 2.500 outlets.

In addition to that Hyundai Motor UK is the first Korean car manufacturer to make it in to the top ten best-selling manufacturers in the UK, an 11 place improvement since 2008.
