TOTAL's Stanislas Mittelman: Zero fatalities in 365 days - 200 million US Dollar investment in Egypt

Last week was a busy week in Egypt for the Senior Vice President for TOTAL Africa, Stanislas Mittelman. One day after announcing and signing a five-year contract with the Egyptian El Marakby group at a professional and well-organized press conference at the Four Seasons First Mall Hotel in Giza, Mr. Mittelman had a meeting with the Egyptian Prime Minister Sherif Ismail, to which he was accompanied by Jerome Dechamps, Executive Vice President Mediterranean & Middle East at TOTAL and Ian Lepetit, TOTAL Egypt Managing Director.

According to Al Oula Channel, the public and state-owned TV Channel which is part of the Egyptian Radio & Television Union ERTU, the TOTAL representatives and the Prime Minister office announced that TOTAL will invest 200 million US dollars in the Egyptian market during the next five years, which is a good sign for the Egyptian economy and also shows how strong TOTAL is compared to the other competitors in the market.

This was Mittelman's first visit to Egypt and the press conference started with a small delay with a presentation from Ian Lepetit, Stanislas Mittelman and Hassan El Marakby about the signed five-years deal.

But what was even more interesting than the deal with El Marakby group, was what Stanislas Mittelman had to say about the engagement of TOTAL when it comes to CSR and Road Safety activities. Mittelman assured that 'road safety' is not just a CSR activity for TOTAL, but explained that it is one of the core business pillars and elements for TOTAL.

He continued that TOTAL has around 350.000 people working daily at the different TOTAL stations worldwide. In Africa and the Middle East there are around 6000-7000 truck drivers, whereas there are around 300 truck drivers working with permanent contracts in Egypt only. Those Egyptian drivers are receiving regular safety & awareness as well as driving trainings and there are even potential plans to have a permanent training center for those drivers in Egypt, according to Mittelman.

One thing which Stanislas Mittelman was very proud of is that last Wednesday was a milestone for TOTAL, as this is the first time in its history that 365 days passed without even one single fatalities among its staff worldwide.

I did not write much about the El Marakby-TOTAL deal or the meeting with the Egyptian Prime Minister Sherif Ismail, as I think that road safety is a much more important issue to talk about, especially since Egypt has one of the worst road safety records worldwide.

Therefore I hope that in the future we will hear and see more road safety activities from TOTAL in Egypt and I also hope that we will also be able to show and inform our readers and viewers about the TOTAL motorsport activities such as the Formula 1 (even though TOTAL is leaving the F1 championship in 2017), the Dakar Rally, the World Rally Championship and the Superbike and MotoGP in which it competes with its sub-brand ELF, as this would be much more interesting and useful for the Egyptian and Middle Eastern audience.
