VW Touareg: We are in the Army now
But when you look closer, you can see that Volkswagen is not joking with this car at all.
Instead or driving through mud in some Stephen Spielberg movie set in Hollywood, VW is rather thinking of driving through war zones and real military scenes.
The VW Touareg military prototype looks like he wants to compete with the real H1 Hummers around Basra and the Green Zone in Down-town Baghdad. There has been not much information about the project till now, but it seems VW is hoping that the aging and outdated military versions of the Mercedes’ G-Class (which was also manufactured in Austria under the name Puch) will give them the advantage when seeking defense contracts from European and Middle Eastern countries.
Painted in a matte green and stripped of all its chrome, the exterior would do a good job of being camouflaged. Various antennas give the Touareg the upper hand in state of the art communications systems, while numerous recovery hooks at the front and rear allow for easy rescue in case the vehicle become trapped in mud or snow.
The engine would most likely be Volkswagen’s V10 TDI that has 310hp and 533ft/lbs of torque for the heavy-armored version (B6 and B7) or the 2.5 V6 TDI for a possible light-armored version (B4), as these two engines are know for their enormous torque, fuel efficiency and towing power.
The W12 engine would probably be too heavy and at the same time to thirsty for heavy army mission or longer desert trips.
Would be great if the Egyptian Army considers such a nice looking car. But probably they wouldn't chose the Touareg Army because of the Volkswagen dealer (passenger cars) in Egypt.
So, So, let's hope that VWN would offer a VW Multivan Army edition soon. Maybe the new VW dealer for light commercial vehicles in Egypt (Dogus Auto) will have more luck with the Egyptian army because of their new service center.
