Road accidents & recalls live on Nile News TV tonight

Road accidents in Egypt are caused by reckless and inexperienced drivers, mal-functioning cars and poor road condition. One of main reason of fatal accidents in Egypt is that in lots of cases cars are mal-functioning because they have not been repaired properly or repaired at all by the local Egyptian importer although the mother-company anncounced an official recalls because of a known technical failure.

Auto Arabia's editor and road safety expert Mohamed Sheta will unveil some of these recalls and will be talking together with other experts (Colonel Kamel Yassin -Head of Giza Traffic Department- and Mr. Kamel EL Mongy - Vice President of Egyptian Road Authority) and celebrities (Egyptian actor Khaled Abu El Naga) live tonight (20.2.2008 / 10.30 pm Cairo Local Time) in the program MUBASHER MEN EL KAHIRA on the Egyptian Arabic-speaking satellite news channel NILE NEWS TV (Kanat El Nile El Ekhbariya) about the devastating crash-test results of Chinese cars (like the Brilliance) and other technical failures and recalls (e.g. Renault and Jeep Cherokee) and what the Egyptian government should do to improve road safety and the safety of any cars sold in Egypt.

Allow me to say that the complacency, incompetence and lack of
professionalism of the Ministry of Interiors and many of its officers is
the main cause of road accidents & their fatal consequences in Egypt.
I would like to ask the minister of interior: why won't the police stop a
massive truck that has damaged rear and front lights driving along
Cairo-Alex road at night, but would stop a professional who's 5 km over
the speed limit, or with a driving license a few days past its renewal date?

Also, why they won't stop trucks with worn out tyres as in the picture
which was posted on the Auto Arabia group on www.facebook.com recently?

Why can't they penalize reckless and dangerous drivers? Why can't they
develop the tools (patrols, video cameras etc.) to capture the evidence
to indict dangerous drivers and ban them from driving?

Can the Egyptian Minister of Interiors tell me what advice he would give his grand
children to cross the streets of Cairo safely?

It is they who have the responsibility to make sure that cars and
drivers are safe to be on the roads. I simply tell them: do this part of
your job well and you would save lives, some of them might be your loved
ones.

Dear Editor,

I saw the episode about road safety and car accidents on Nile News TV yesterday, in which you and some government official discussed the causes of accidents in Egypt. The episode was really great...but it was very obvious you did not have the chance to make you points clear as the Giza Traffic Department director and the Egyptian Road Authority representative were talking all the time.

The pictures and clips of the Brilliance Galena crash-test and the Chrysler Voyager crash-test done by the EuroNCAP and ADAC were very
apparent and I hope it rang a bell in the mind of future clients!

It did not need a" brilliant" mind to identify those cars, but I was very disappointed that the Egyptian TV didn’t comment or allow you to comment on those shocking crash-test results. I saw them in full length on www.youtube.com and was traumatized when I listen to the commentary of the testers.

I recognized the Black Jeep Cherokee of a relative of mine, which suffered a severe crash on the Ain El Sokhna desert road recently. Pictures of the remaining parts of the crashed Jeep Cherokee showed a non-functioning airbag. My question is: Why didn’t the owner sue the Jeep / Chrysler company for that cause I read before that there were many official recalls for that Cherokee before.

I know that the drivers and passengers were severely injured. One of them even became paralyzed and was very close to death. The representative of the interior ministry was apparently talking about the road safety measurements in Utopia, not Egypt ! Why isn’t the new Consumer Protection Agency doing anything to save the lives of the unsuspicious and innocent customers? Such actions should have the effect of a wake-up call to the industry ... mal-functioning cars and tires are more dangerous and more deadly anything else in Egypt right now and that needs more attention from the Consumer Protection Agency than comparing bottled mineral water!
