1000 Nm, 630hp and a 6.0-litre V12 biturbo V12 ! Enough said! The new Mercedes S65 AMG !

A few days ago we published an article about the special edition BMW 760Li V12 M Bi-Turbo which is conceptualized and produced exclusivity for the Middle East market and which is the is the first 7 Series model to wear the famed M badge (article BMW 760Li V12 M Bi-Turbo) . The 760Li is powered by a 6.0-litre V12 Twin-Turbo charged engine that produces 544hp, 750 Nm of torque and an eight-speed automatic transmission that catapults the sedan from 0 to 100km/h in 4.6 seconds.

Today, Mercedes Benz surprised us with another ‘pleasant’ V12-surprise by launching the first pictures and specs of the new Mercedes S 65 AMG. With twelve cylinders, twin-turbocharging, 463 kW (630 hp) of output and an amazing 1000 newton metres (!) of torque, this new S 65 AMG sets new standards as the most powerful vehicle in its segment of the market.

So, is the Mercedes S65 AMG V12 biturbo indeed much better than the other amazing European competitors such as the German BMW 760Li V12 M Bi-Turbo, the also Stuttgart-based Porsche Panamera Turbo, the British Bentley Flying Spur or the Italian Maserati Quattroporte GTS? More to that later.

Back to the S65 AMG, Mercedes hopes that exceptional performance and outstanding dynamism would be the hallmarks of the AMG 6.0-litre V12 biturbo engine.
/> With its reduced fuel consumption and compliance with the EU 6 exhaust emissions standard, the new V12 saloon is fit for the future.

The AMG sports suspension based on MAGIC BODY CONTROL comes as standard with ROAD SURFACE SCAN, the world's first suspension with eyes, although many German car magazines were not so impressed by this new but rather ‘slow’ technology.

Mercedes sees that the S 65 AMG offers supreme exclusivity in design and equipment specification and that the two innovations, the head-up display and the touchpad, represent further enhancements in terms of comfort and safety.

And although BMW launched the BMW 760Li V12 M Bi-Turbo last week at the 2013 Dubai Motor Show, Mercedes Benz stated that the S 65 AMG is the only high-performance 12-cylinder automobile from a German premium manufacturer, adding that is a car with a pedigree since the first generation of the S 65 AMG was launched in 2003, with the second generation being produced from 2006 until 2013.

Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH said, ‘’soon after the successful launch of the S 63 AMG, we are unveiling the new S 65 AMG. Supreme exclusivity and incomparable dynamism provide the guarantee of a high fascination potential. With the third generation of the S 65 AMG, we offer our loyal and discerning V12 customers a unique high-performance automobile."

The AMG 6.0-litre V12 biturbo engine delivers 463 kW (630 hp) with a maximum torque of 1000 newton metres, figures that Mercedes claims to enable the S 65 AMG to outperform all other vehicles in its segment.

Mercedes hopes that such a superiority is supported and highlighted by the car's performance: the S 65 AMG accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds, with a top speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited). The strengths of the 12-cylinder biturbo engine from Mercedes-AMG include its effortless acceleration in all speed ranges as well as its refined operation with the distinctive V12 sound typical of AMG.

Compared with the previous model, fuel consumption has been reduced by 2.4 litres per 100 kilometres (NEDC, combined).

With a fuel consumption of 11.9 litres per 100 kilometres (NEDC, combined), Mercedes claims that the new S 65 AMG is the world's most fuel-efficient V12 high-performance saloon in terms of power and torque, although the fuel-consumption of the BMW 760Li V12 M Bi-Turbo might be even better.

The range-topping 12-cylinder model already meets the requirements of the EU6 emissions standard, which is not due to come into force until 2015.

Technical highlights of the AMG 6.0-litre V12 biturbo engine:

• Biturbocharging
• Aluminium crankcase
• Forged crankshaft of high-grade alloy steel
• Multi-spark ignition with 12 twin-spark ignition units
• Air-to-water intercooler with low-temperature circuit
• Alternator management
• ECO start/stop function

Like the previous model, the new S 65 AMG is available exclusively with a long wheelbase. The AMG V12 saloon will celebrate its double world premiere simultaneously at the Los Angeles International Auto Show and at the Tokyo Motor Show (both: 20 November to 1 December 2013).

The market launch of the S65 AMG will start in March 2014 and the price in Germany (incl. 19% VAT) will be € 232,050

So, will the new Mercedes S65 AMG be the bench-mark in this luxury segment when compared to the BMW 760Li V12 Bi-Turbo, the Porsche Panamera Turbo, the Bentley Flying Spur or the Maserati Quattroporte GTS?

Well, only a comprehensive test-drive on a German Autobahn would prove that especially that the other competitors, like the Maserati Quattroporte GTS, are really very impressive!
