Bahrain TV broadcasts Formula One 2009 season in Middle East & North Africa

25.03.2009 / Sakhir – Cairo

After five years of F1 broadcasting in the Middle East, Al-Jazeera Sports TV was replaced today by Bahrain TV as the official F1 broadcaster in the Middle East. The Bahrain Radio and Television Corporation has been awarded the rights to be the official broadcaster of the 2009 FIA Formula One World Championship in the Middle East and North Africa.

The announcement produced both surprise and pride during today’s press conference held at Bahrain International Circuit. Those attending the press conference were informed that the Kingdom’s national broadcaster would have the rights to broadcast the entire Formula One season throughout the Middle East and North African territories starting this weekend at the first round in Melbourne, Australia.

On the occasion, Shaikh Rashid bin Abdul Rahman Al Khalifa, Chief Executive Officer of BRTC, extended his thanks and appreciation to His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, His Highness the Prime Minister Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa and His Highness the Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander Shaikh Salman bin Isa Al Khalifa for their continued support and ongoing efforts to boost the Kingdom’s profile through the hosting and organising of one of the biggest international sporting events in the world such as the Formula One World Championship.

He added that he was delighted to see Bahrain Television become the official broadcaster to the region. Shaikh Rashid thanked Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa, Culture and Information Minister, for her continued support as well as the efforts from the BIC Chairman of the Board, Zayed R. Alzayani, and its members for their cooperation in realising this opportunity.

Shaikh Rashid said: “I would like to thank all those who have been involved for their commitment to Formula One and for giving Bahrain Television the opportunity to become actively engaged in increasing motor-sport knowledge and building up the fan base throughout the 2009 season. As the first race of the season lies just days ahead, we look forward to giving our local and regional viewers the best possible coverage of a championship that the Kingdom has become so deeply engrossed in.

Martin Whitaker, Chief Executive Officer of Bahrain International Circuit, said: “The FIA Formula One World Championship is the largest and most watched sporting series in world sport. The only events that are bigger than F1 are the Olympic Games and the FIFA World Cup. However, these events take place once every four years while Formula One is active throughout the year – every year.

Having seen the Formula One World Championship make a home for itself in the Kingdom of Bahrain in 2004, this move now sees Bahrain expand coverage to the motor sport fan base across the region.

Whitaker said: “Bahrain TV’s role in being the official broadcaster of the FIA Formula One World Championship in the Middle East and North African territories is significant to say the least. Broadcasting the most watched sport on television is a massive opportunity to promote the Kingdom of Bahrain and the tourism and business opportunities that exist in both the Kingdom and the region. Last year’s Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix was the second most watched race on the calendar and the race saw a sell-out crowd with over 47,000 people in the circuit on race day.

He added: “The Kingdom of Bahrain becomes the focal point of the sporting world during the Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix and audience figures for the race weekend exceed 500 million people around the world. Coupled with direct and in-direct economic impact figures on the Kingdom approaching US$560 million during race week this makes Bahrain’s round of the FIA Formula One World Championship extremely valuable and demonstrates the massive potential of the race to both the country and the region in general.

The first round of the 2009 FIA Formula One World Championship looks set to begin this weekend in Melbourne, Australia, on March 27-28-29 and can be watched live on Bahrain Television’s Satellite TV Sports Channel 1 in Arabic and Sports Channel 2 in English. Throughout the year viewers will also be able to tune into the Formula BMW Series, Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup, GP2 Asia Series as well as the Australian V8 Supercar Championship Series. Forming a platform for motorsport coverage in the Kingdom, and the region, Bahrain Television will continue to broadcast local races and championships over the racing season.

We at Auto Arabia wish Bahrain TV and its host Amar Al Bannai good luck and hope that after five years of Arabic F1 broadcasting in the region, Bahrain TV will be able to create this year a large public and media awareness, which the Formula 1 deserves in the Middle East.

Hi all Mid-East F1 fans!
After last years constant searching for any coverage of F1 I finally found it on Bahrain Sports Channels on Arabsat service.(I had to get another dish specially for Arabsat as a conflict existed on the equivalent Nilesat frequencies)... According to the F1 "world feeds" it looks like our trusted friends at Bahrain Sports TV are going to show both Arabic and English coverage of the seasons action. Many thanks to Bahrain Sports TV for their coverage of the 2010 season.

Dear Elias,
thank you for your comment / inquiry. It will probably be a different Arabic free-to-air TV satellite channel which will broadcast the 2010 F1 season. More details will be revealed at a later stage.

Since the F1 broadcasting was replaced by you instead of aljazeera sport tv, i couldn't watch any race on your channel till now.
Meanwile, if you will not broadcast on nile sat, aljazeera sport tv should again be the eclusive broadcasting channel for these races.
Your prompt action is highly appreciated.

If the people responsible for signing F1 TV broadcasting rights think that they did the Arab F1 fans a big favor,
by letting Bahrain TV transmit the Formula One 2009 season in Middle East & North Africa, then they obviously made a big mistake and just made things worse.
The F1 TV broadcast on Aljazeera Sports TV was bad enough, but the F1 broadcast on Bahrain TV is even worse. And I though it couldn't get worse!!! But i was
strongly mistaken!!!
Beside the fact that a lot of viewers have more information than the guests present in the studio, there are also horrible pronunciation
and technical mistakes. I know that it will take time to have F1 broadcasting quality and commenting bench mark levels,
like the great John Watson when he was working for Eurosport. But these people have to be wisely selected and tested before they go on air.
As a matter of fact, the "coolest" thing was the simultaneous bilingual chat commentary on Bahrain Sport TV during the free sessions on 24th and 25th of April 2009
at the Bahrain F1 race. One guy is talking in English and the other one is talking in Arabic...and both are not related to each other....!
To err is human...but these things must be immediately corrected and transformed to a more professional level, by showing more high quality content.
People have to enjoy watching F1 in Arabic on TV. Otherwise you will start to ask yourself why should I torture myself and watch my favorite sport in miserable
quality and amateur-like commenting? I think the FIA should check on the Arabic F1 broadcast more closely, in order to win more F1 fans in the region and in
order not to lose the existing F1 fans.

I didn’t face a problem to find the channels on nilesat. Both the Arabic and the English one. But the problem is that the quality of the broadcast is very bad and really you don’t enjoy watching the race. I can't believe that a country like Bahrain offers such a bad broadcasting. Last years on Aljazeera I was really enjoying it. I had to search on internet a lot to know that Bahrain TV are the exclusive broadcaster, they didn't even advertise for this in the known TV channels, magazines, newspapers or even online through facebook, mass mailing or e-advertising. Please send my comments to them, and hope they give us quality picture. They have the money and I am sure they can do it.

The UAE have really missed a trick here not having full coverage in both Arabic and English freely available. No one would think they're putting on their first F1 race this year.....! If anything, it's discouraged any enthusiasm for the sport.

I followed the Chinese GP 2009 on Bahrain sports channel on Nilesat. The picture was good but I was quite disappointed to find the commentary only in Arabic. I hope the Bahraini officials can do something about this and broadcast the race with English commentary for non-Arabs, just like Aljazeera used to do.
If the editor has an idea about how to tune in on an English commentary on any Nilesat channel, the help would be appreciated. Thanx.

Editors response:
Dear Elssa,
according to the official Bahraini TV and BIC sources there is also an English commentary. Please check the frequencies we published below.

I don't know, is it meant to be like that or it's something wrong that might be fixed within next hours???? I am very upset! All the support races will also be broadcast on this channel which can be found on Arabsat badr 4, frequency 12226, polarity horizontal fec ¾, symbol rate 27500.

Thanks for all the confusing information on Bahrain TV, Bahrain Sport TV and Bahrain Sports 2 TV. Unfortunately on NILESAT , Bahrain Sport TV is not telecast and is NOT AVAILABLE. Bahrain TV is available but not sure if this will come at all.
Bahrain Sport 2 TV channel is telecast only on BADR satellite however this channel signal strength is very weak.
Shame on Bahrain TV organisers, they are not able to properly give detail or advertise. They are also not available on leading networks like Pehla or E Vision in the UAE.

Dear Scott,
as mentioned before, Bahrain TV and Bahrain Sports TV are free-to-air satellite channels, which you will find on Nilesat 1. Just search for the satellite Nilesat on your receiver, and update the channel list.
But probably the broadcast will only be in Arabic.
Maybe you should ask for a refund from Al Jazeera.
