BMW Is Recalling 51,000 Motorcycles for Fuel Leak problems

2014 is not starting well for BMW as the German luxury cars and motorcycles manufacturer has to recall almost 51,000 motorcycles because of a possible fuel leak, according to official statements.

Most of the recalled BMW motorcycles are 2005 till 2011 models from the popular R and K series models, of which many are used in the police forces in Germany, France, the United Arab Emirates and Serbia.

Also Egypt has been using the BMW R-models in its Police forces recently

This recall action comes almost 14 months after N.H.T.S.A. started investigating consumer complaints about those serious fuel leaks from BMW motorcycles.

Although the automaker said the leaks do not pose “an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety”, BMW confirmed it would recall the 51.000 motorcycles.

This fuel leak problem involves cracks developing in a plastic flange on the fuel pump, possibly after a maintenance procedure is performed incorrectly. BMW added that the corrosive fluids could damage a seal and by that cause “a small leak.”

It is reported that at least one BMW motorcycle owner told the US safety agency that the leak was not small at all.

The BMW motorcycles owner reportedly said, “I started the motorcycle engine – a few seconds after it started, gasoline started to gush from the front of the bike onto the engine,”

Another BMW owner wrote to the agency that Before I knew it, I was in a puddle of gasoline. I shut it off as soon as I realized what was happening. I mopped up the gasoline off of the floor to eliminate the fire danger.”

Other BMW owners told the US safety agency that, after finishing a ride, they found a pant leg soaked in gasoline.

BMW on the other hand told the US safety agency that it was not aware of any accidents, injuries or fires related to the issue.

The official BMW report which it had to deliver to the US safety agency said that the German automaker received its first customer complaint of a fuel leak back in 2006, in addition to several more complaints the following year.

By the beginning of 2010, BMW had investigated the fuel leak problem and concluded that the leaks were caused by improper servicing techniques. Therefore BMW made manufacturing changes to new models to prevent such problems during the first half of 2010,

Auto Arabia is compiling and preparing for our distinguished readers the complete list of all the 51.000 BMW motorcycles affected by this recall and will publish it shortly here on our website and on our Auto Arabia Facebook group.
