BMW recalls 176.000 units of the 3 Series, 5 Series and X1 Series to fix its power brakes
The affected BMW models, because of insufficient lubrication to a vacuum pump, can lose the power assistance when braking. A BMW spokesman said the driver can still stop the car in the event of a loss of power braking, but it will surely take more force on the brake pedal.
The models involved in the recall all have the turbocharged four-cylinder, 2-liter gasoline engines.
The recall includes the following models:
- 2012-2014 320i, 328i, 320i xDrive and 328i xDrive sedans
- 2014 328i xDrive Touring Sports Wagon
- 2012 and 2013 528i and 528i xDrive sedans
- 2013-14 X1 sDrive28i and X1 xDrive28i vehicles
- 2012-14 X4 sDrive28i roadsters.
BMW said 76,191 of the vehicles are in the United States, about 25,000 in China, 9,376 in Canada, 6,841 in Germany, 2,738 units in Mexico and the remaining vehicles in the rest of the world.
The diesel-powered BMW vehicles, mainly sold in Europe, are not subject to the recall.
BMW started notifying customers in November, and when a repair is expected to be ready in December 2013 and January 2014 it will tell owners to bring their vehicles in to dealerships.
BMW Middle East and BMW Egypt have not announced yet how many BMW vehicles are affected in those markets.
